LAPIS LAZULI & GOLD LEAF NECKLACE
The Sumerians were enamored with the luxurious import from far off Afghanistan, Lapis Lazuli. It symbolized wealth and/or royalty and served as a high offering to deities in the afterlife. This headdress and necklace, dated around 2600 BC, was excavated from the Royal Cemetery of Ur in Southern Iraq.
